| Without a LISS-type connection, each user wishing to receive a copy of the data would require their own connection to the station. The typical station is on a low bandwidth tail circuit of a local internet service provider. This tail circuit is the weak link in the connection. One can observe when several users retrieve data, the individual connections to the station could easily overload the low-bandwidth tail circuit, bringing the data transmissions to a halt. A LISS-type connection has an important advantage over the single user/single connection method: the LISS avoids the potential bottleneck at the tail circuit by only requiring one connection to the station, allowing multiple users to obtain the data at the LISS. |
