..Seismic Displays--
IRIS Headquarters displayA Sun UltraSparc drives the display recording real-time 20 sps data from 3 IRIS/USGS GSN stations onto a helicorder drum. The monitors above the helicorder drum show an automatically updated map of worldwide seismicity and a list of the recent events which are labeled on the map. The map and earthquake list are generated from the finger quake server at the NEIC. To the right of the earthquake list is a "slide show" of damage caused by earthquakes over the years. The helicorder drum on the far right records data from an AS-1 demonstration seismometer in the plexiglass-covered case beneath. This display resides in the main lobby of the AAAS building, which houses IRIS headquarters. A similar display (shown below) visits major science museums across the United States.
IRIS Traveling Road ShowThe IRIS "Traveling Road Show" is shown at right. The LISS provides data from GSN stations to the left and center helicorder drums, while the third drum records output from the AS-1 seismometer to the right. The monitors display a map and list of recent events published by the finger quake server at the NEIC. First shown at the 9th Annual IRIS Workshop in 1997, the display now travels across the United States, stopping at major museums and bringing real-time seismology to the public.
Dr. Bob Woodward and the IRIS Traveling Road ShowThe combination of real-time data from stations around the world, the seismicity map, USGS damage slide show, and the interactive demonstration seismometer draws crowds at the IRIS display at IRIS headquarters and at major museums as the "IRIS Traveling Road Show" makes its way around the United States.
